On September 23-24, AKEP attended the yearly ITU-EKIP Regional Regulatory Forum in Budva, Montenegro, on the topic “Vision for Connectivity: Innovating the Future of Telecom Regulation and Security.” AKEP was represented by Mr. Armer Juka, Member of the Board, and Mr. Vasil Mitezi, Head of the Monitoring and Inspection Directorate.
In his brief speech, Mr. Juka informed the participants about the significant progress made by Albania in the electronic communications sector during the last year. He highlighted key achievements, including the adoption of the EECC and NIS 2 Directives into internal legislation and the launch of the tender process for 5G frequencies.
On the sidelines of the conference, AKEP and ITU held a previously scheduled meeting to discuss the progress of ongoing work between the two institutions. Mr. Juka updated Mr. Jaroslaw Ponder, Head of ITU Europe, on the adoption of the new sectoral law and the expected timeframe for the exploitation of the 3400-3800 MHz band. On behalf of Chairman Frashëri, Mr. Juka expressed AKEP’s deep appreciation for the high-quality and timely support that ITU has been providing to the regulatory authority since the important meeting one year ago between Mr. Frashëri and Mr. Zavazava, Director of ITU’s Telecommunication Development Bureau. Mr. Ponder reaffirmed ITU’s commitment to finalize work on broadband mapping by the end of this year and to start the project on spectrum monitoring no later than the beginning of 2025. The parties also explored the opportunity to cooperate on organizational efficiency to prepare a regulatory authority fit for the digital age.
